I was running some errands with my kids for about an hour the other day and when we got home I heard a ruckus coming from the backyard, so I went to investigate. The gate was open and I could hear kids yelling. A family that we have had a couple of playdates with was hanging out in my yard! Playing on the jungle gym and running around. I was confused and asked the mom what was going on and if I had forgotten about a playdate that we had scheduled. She said they were taking a walk and the kids saw that our gate was open, got excited and ran into the yard looking for us. They started playing and she couldn’t get them to leave once they realized we weren’t home. The mom was sitting on my deck with her feet up on a chair watching her kids go nuts in my yard.
This is weird, right? I mean, what if one of those kids got hurt in my yard? That could be a problem for me, right? I wasn’t happy, but wasn’t sure what to do because she was acting like her yard crashing was no big deal. My yard isn’t a public park. She isn’t a best friend, I hardly know her! If my kids tried to run into another person’s yard I would stop them because I think that’s rude. These people were not invited over. The nerve!
After about 15 minutes I guess her kids got bored and said they wanted to go. She got up and told me to have a great day. That was it. I felt violated! Do I need to put locks on my gates? A no trespassing sign on the fence? Do I need to install barbed wire? I mean, really. What do you guys think of this? No big deal or crazy?
