Can you believe this?
I had a play date with another mom & her live in nanny. The nanny is a senior citizen & opened the door when my son and I arrived. She was wearing what my family calls a house coat, my grandmother wears one. She also had her hair set in pin curls, just like my grandma does & was wearing Isotoner slippers. She could have been my grandma, but she was Filipino.
She took us into the giant living room & the mom was there watching TV & drinking coffee. The boy my child was there to play with took my son to his room upstairs. I sat with the mom and the nanny got me a coffee. She didn’t ask how I would like it, just gave it to me & said “It’s regular, with milk & sugar”. I don’t take sugar, but whatever.
We started talking and the nanny sat across from us staring. It was weird. I tried to be friendly, but she wasn’t having it. She just stared. I was uncomfortable and then the kids started fighting upstairs. This was the perfect excuse to get away. The nanny followed me. The boy’s room was to the right of the staircase & there was a spiral staircase in the middle of the landing. Once we settled the kids down we walked out of the room together and nanny said “I live up there, in that attic”. I was surprised; I mean, I have a hard time negotiating a spiral staircase, I can’t imagine a 75 year old woman doing that.
We went back into the living room and then the kids came down. The mom wasn’t happy about that. The toddler pooped in his pull up & the mom ordered the nanny to change him as she sat and relaxed.
The nanny came back after changing the boy and sat across from us again. Then the mom said “Malia, get the Lincoln Logs and play with the boys. She came back with the logs, sat on the floor & started to build with the kids. The nanny was uncomfortable on the floor, I could tell. I started to play too, but the mom said to let Malia handle it.
After about 1 hour I decided to leave. Malia walked me to the door and whispered that she’s looking for a new job and to let her know if I hear of anything. Then she said she wants to watch older kids so she can go to the senior center while they’re at school. She also said the mom is a “real bitch.”

Good god. I cannot even begin to fathom having the kind of patience required to be a domestic servant. I have a hard enough time being polite to my own family.

Poor Malia! It sounds like that spiral staircase is a broken hip waiting to happen…
Too funny!!

That is a bad playdate — I hope that poor nanny finds a new position.
